Social Media Etiquette

Posted by Crawford Paul on Sep 12, 2011

Jay Gilmore from MODX recently posted an excellent question on Google+ about Twitter - "Do you ask people to share or RT on social networks? Why or why not? I can safely say that in my experience, when you ask for people to share something they will, especially when it relates to a call for help vs a call to action. Do you think it's okay to ask for a share?"

There were several responses but I started thinking about his questions a bit more.  Who writes the rules regarding etiquette and social media? 10 years ago social media was barely a buzz word and now it's life as we know it. I don't really think there is a right or wrong answer to Jay's question. If you feel (as I do) that it's ok to ask for a share then go for it.  If you don't then don't.  I suppose at some point the big social media gurus will come alnog and try to set some kind of standard. Until then it's all fair game.

Your thoughts?
